Mercury Zebra Midge This weeks fly of the week is the Mercury Zebra Midge. This is a standard pattern with an addition. Instead of using the regular copper, gold, or silver bead we used a glass bead. I like to use either the Quicksilver color or clear. Also a pearl bead is a good color. I like to fish this fly just under the surface when the fish are eating dries. If there is no surface activity going on then I like to fish it down on the bottom, under an indicator, behind a Pheasant Tail or Coppper John. This is a great llittle fly when fished either way. My favorite thing about this fly is the fact that it is so easy to tie. Here is the recipe;
Fly of the Week: Mercury Zebra Midge
Use: This is an excellent midge larva and emerging midge imitation to be fished in both stillwaters and streams.
Hook: Dai Riki #135 sz. 16-22
Thread: Black Uni-Thread 8/0
Body: Black Thread
Rib: Copper Wire
Thorax: Thread
Head: Quicksilver or Clear Glass Bead
Note: This fly can also be tied in other colors like red, brown, or olive and can be just as effective in these colors as in black. |
