Giant rusty spinner Fly of the week: Giant rusty spinner
As we all know the rusty spinner is a great fly to have around when trying to match a mayfly spinner fall. But did you know by simply tying it in sizes 8-10 it can become a deadly drake spinner imitation. That’s right Bucky, just before dark when all the other drakes are preparing to emerge, the spinner fall takes place. On our own beloved Silver Creek, this is a magical hatch to observe. If you are lucky enough to be there when the hatch occurs. The Brown Drake is a member of the mayfly family. These flies have burrowing nymphs and are not readily available to trout until the hatch begins. Then it literally becomes a feeding frenzy. The nymph and the adult are all targets to the early summer trout pallet. However, it is the spinner that gets the most action early evening. Tie up a few and head for the creek. Now is the time for the drake hatch.
