Kaufman Stone
Kaufman stone Fly of the week: Kaufman Stone
Randall Kaufman is accredited for this fantastic fly. There is a winter hatch of little black stoneflies that takes place on the upper regions of the Salmon River. This fly is black in color and the nymph looks a lot like the Kaufman stone. When these flies are on the banks and in the river, steelhead key in on them. The Kaufmann stone is the best pattern to fish in this area. Weighted and deep is the only way to fish these flies. Dead drift through this fly riffles and in the tail-outs of riffles. You can also swing drift this fly if you are able to keep it deep enough.
